About Youth Summit
Asia Pacific Cooperative Youth Summit (APCYS)
Youth are the most important and dynamic segment of the population given their sheer numbers, their ability to shape the future, their power to bring about change, and their role as contributors to the economy. Youth can create an identity for themselves and move their countries forward. The cooperative enterprise model with ‘identity’ at the core has the potential to rally young people to take ownership, empower them to start businesses, inspire them to develop sustainable communities, and engage as active citizens. We are in a time of great need for innovative and sustainable ideas that respond to the risks and trends within the youth community and youth organisations.
APCYS aims to bring together youth from different parts of the region and inculcate the culture of youth cooperativism.
APCYS 1.0, “Youth Cooperatives and the Power of Entrepreneurship and Innovation” was held in Bali, Indonesia from 19 to 22 September 2016. 70 young people from 17 countries participated. The Summit hosted by the Kubu Gunung Credit Cooperative, provided a platform for youth in the region to interact with each other, hear stories by young persons who started cooperatives, engage in team activities, and make friends from the cooperative movement.
APCYS 2.0, “Creative Skills, Cooperative Entrepreneurship, and Sustainable Development” was held in Cebu, Philippines from 18 to 21 August 2018. LAMAC Multi-Purpose Cooperative played host to 147 young cooperators from 17 countries at the Hidden Valley Wave Pool and Mountain Resort in Pinamungahan, Cebu, a province of the Philippines located in the Central Visayas Region.
APCYS 3.0, “Celebrate Youth as Torchbearers of the Cooperative Identity” is being organized in collaboration with the ICA-EU Partnership, the ICA-AP Committee on Youth Cooperation (ICYC), and the ICA-Domus Trust. It will be a virtual event from 27 – 29 July 2021.
A cooperative form of enterprise provides young people with the means to create their employment, find jobs with enterprises that often align with their values, participate as member-owners of enterprises, address gender inequalities, and have representation in governance structures where their voice is heard. Youth need to be made aware of these advantages that the cooperative model with its values and principles merits for their direct participation and involvement.
The ICA’s 33rd World Congress with the theme Deepening the Cooperative Identity is looking to youth to add their voice to address “cross-generational and inclusive” leadership, remove barriers between younger and older members, and ensure that strong solidarity, energy and passion among youth is channelled into cooperation and build a brighter cooperative future.”
APCYS 3.0 will celebrate the role played by youth in cooperatives, showcase youth entrepreneurs, get ideas from youth about new forms of cooperatives, and inculcate in the culture of youth cooperativism. It will provide a platform to
- Shine spotlight on youth who are at the forefront of starting new cooperatives to address needs in their communities.
- Explore how we make the cooperative identity a competitive advantage in attracting the young and in exploring new opportunities.
- Create an environment for youth to be engaged in work driven by passion and empathy towards others as well as cooperative values and principles, rather than competition and profit-making.
- Hear from youth, the new and sustainable enterprise ideas on cooperatives that cater to the needs and aspirations of the youth in their country, through Coop Pitch Competition.
